  9. WHATIS?
  10. -------
  11. I'm a neat little utility that will allow you to stip all the unwanted BBS and crew
  12. tags from lha files before you de-archive them. This means that you have a much
  13. cleaner destination and it's not full of stupid ansi crap and other shit.

  16. WHAT DO I NEED?
  17. ---------------
  18. Well DOS 2 or above, REQTOOLS.Library & JS_Tools.library (both supplied) and install
  19. the curent database into your S: directory or put it where you put DE-TAG itself.
  20.  
  21. You also need Multiview in your sys:utilities drawer for DOS 3.0/3.1.
  22.  
  23. Or if you are using DOS 2.0/2.1 then you need both MORE and DISPLAY in your
  24. sys:utilities drawer.
  25.  
  26. DE-TAG will first check to see if the required viewer is in the sys:utilities
  27. drawer, if it's not then you will not be able to do any viewing and the program
  28. will simply return to asking you the question.

  33.   When viewing IFF pictures, DISPLAY will show the picture for 2 seconds and then
  34.                 close the picture down, all you have to do is wait!

  38.   I have told Multiview to use its own screen so that there are no problems with
  39. palettes, you are required to do and AMIGA Q to exit this screen or use multiviews
  40.                                menus to do the same.

  45. HOW:
  46. ----
  47. Simply select GO-DETAG and a file requestor will appear which will only show
  48. directories and LHA files. Select the lha(s) (Multi with the shift key) and De-Tag
  49. will go to work.
  50.  
  51. Firstly for each file it will ask you wether you want to use the FULL or QUICK
  52. De-Tagging method.
  53.  
  54. FULL - This will go through the ENTIRE archive, so if you have 2000 files in it you
  55.        will be there for some time!
  56.  
  57. QUICK - This only checks the ROOT of the LHA file, this is where most of the
  58.         offenders hang out. This is the prefered method.
  59.  
  60. Next De-Tag will pre-process the file and count the files in the LHA. Once done
  61. this information is displayed in the box next to FILES:
  62.  
  63. De-Tag will then ask if you want INTERACTIVE De-Tagging or AUTOMATIC, you may also
  64. cancel at this point. If you do cancel, you are aborting the entire process, all
  65. remaining files will be forgotten.
  66.  
  67. INTERACTIVE - De-tag will ask you about EVERY file it does not already know. Use
  68. this when you still only have a small collection of TAGs that De-Tag knows.
  69.  
  70. AUTOMATIC - Detag will take over from here. The LHA will be scanned and any Tags
  71. that are recognised will be deleted from the archive. But of course, any that it
  72. does not know will be left behind.
  73.  
  74. In INTERACTIVE Mode, when De-Tag comes across a file it does not know, it will ask
  75. you what you want done with it, DE-TAG, SKIP or FILE-COMPLETE.

  77. DE-TAG - will of course delete the file from the LHA, this file will then be added
  78.          to the TAG list and will be recognised from now on.
  79.  
  80. SKIP - This will leave the curent file alone.
  81.  
  82. VIEW - This will call an external viewer and you will be able to read/view the
  83.        file and then make your decision.

  85. FILE COMPLETE - Tells De-Tag that you are finished with the curent file.

  87. Thats it! It could'nt be much simpler.

  89. ** NEW Now after all files are complete, a new window will appear with a POST-PROCESSING
  90. report in it, this will contain the following information...

  92. DETAG MODE noted by Q or F
  93. LHA name
  94. TOTAL Files checked in lha.
  95. TOTAL Files after detaging.
  96. File size before.
  97. File size after.

  100. OTHER STUFF!

  102. In the De-Tag window is a list of all the TAGS curently known by De-Tag, if you
  103. click on any of them a requestor will appear telling you the tag name and the
  104. number of times that it has been De-Tagged!
  105.  
  106. ** NEW When you do click on a tag name, the requester will now ask wether you wish to
  107. kill the tag from the database, you will be asked to confirm your actions before it does
  108. do this. This process is not reversable. There will then be a slight pause while the
  109. program updates it's internal list and the display.

  111. The ABOUT gadget will tell you some riveting stuff like who I am and where you can
  112. get in touch with me, but more importantly, the version and compilation date. It now
  113. also tells you how many tags are in the brain file.

  115. ** NEW MERGE. This will allow you to now merge another de-tag dbase into your own so that
  116. you can increase the number of tags known, this makes the Automatic mode quicker!
  117.  
  118. So you can now just upload your de-tag database files to BBS's and Internet so that other
  119. people can expand their dbase. There is curently a limit of 5000 tags, if the need arises
  120. I will increase this to 10,000.

  122. The 2 files you must include are found either in your S directory or where ever you
  123. have put the DE-TAG Program, they are...

  128. If you do not include the .xr file you will not be able to do a merging!

  130. Below the gadgets are 3 boxes.

  132. TAGS: - This is the total number of tags known.

  134. LHA's: - This is the total number of LHA's in the curent session to be processed.

  136. FILES: - This is the total number of files inside the curent LHA.

  142.  STUPID PEOPLE ARE NOW USING LEGIT FILE NAMES LIKE HIGHSCORE OR JUST README ETC. I TAKE
  143.  NO RESPOSIBITLITY IF YOU CLEAN OUT A LHA WITH LEGIT FILES IN IT. ALWAYS MAKE A BACK UP
  144.              OF THE FILE FIRST AND DE-TAG THIS FILE! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

  146.  ** NEW! V0.64a Will now ask you about any file with the word READ in it. Even if it
  147.  does turn out to be a tag, you have the option of viewing it first & then deciding.

  155.    I would love for you to send me your de-tag dbases to me so I can merge into the
  156.  master list. Or if you use the arexx diropus version, I would love the database file
  157.                                   for that as well.

  160. When you now quit, the window will close, however, your machine will be slower for a few
  161. seconds as it clears and returns all memory used by the tag list. sorry, we are trying
  162. to make this much quicker than it is. (We have already cut the time in half!)

  231.       Removed Directory list view, in full mode, any tags inside a directory will be
  232.        removed. If the directory is then empty, it too will be removed.

  234.       In Interactive mode, if it strikes a file with "READ" in it, it will ask you to
  235.        confirm before it de-tags it automatically. You can then view it just like
  236.        normal to ensure it is a tag or a valid readme file.

  238.       De-Tag dbase is now sorted with each release of a new version.

  240. V0.70a - 11-06-1995
  241.       Converted over to using the most excellent JS_Tools library for the listview & a
  242.        VERY quick sort routine. All tags are now sorted in the program.

  244.       You can now scroll the listview with the cursor keys, use shift + Cursor for page
  245.        jumps and alt up down for top and bottom.

  247.       More tags were added from a supplied arexx database - ;-) Thanks

  249.       DE-TAG now looks first in the directory it was started from for it's database, if
  250.        it does not find it then it will look in S: If it's still not found then it will
  251.        tell you it is BRAIN-DEAD. So if you are upgrading to this version, put the dbase
  252.        somewhere like ram: and then start de-tag. It will read YOUR dbase in S: then do
  253.        a merge on the new dbase in ram to get the extra tags from it.

  257.       Hasty bug work-around! Post Report has been removed while problems with the
  258.        JS_Tools.Library are worked out. Sorry about V0.70a - It should not have
